Imagery in today’s society is so fleeting and new images are constantly churned out. Everyday there is a new meme. On the other hand, artwork is digested in an entirely contrary manner. It is slower, we study the detail and search for deeper meaning. It has more permanence as an object. So it is interesting juxtaposition to paint a meme, or turn something transient in culture into something more solid. Behind these memes are real people and animals and in my work I hope to immortalize Grumpy Cat aka Tardar Sauce ( April 4th 2012- May 14th 2019). This cat brought joy to many and in my portrait I’ve elevated her to something akin to a religious saint.
